Territory Trade Surplus Hits $8.5 Billion
The Northern Territory recorded an $8.5 billion trade surplus, reflecting the continued strength of the Territory’s resources and export sectors. Strong international demand for commodities is supporting economic activity and contributing to employment across mining, energy, logistics, transport and associated support industries. The result reinforces the importance of trade and resource investment to the Territory economy.
Territory Generation Enterprise Agreement Offer
Territory Generation has progressed its enterprise agreement negotiations, with an offer put forward covering wages and employment conditions for its workforce. As a major employer in the Territory’s energy sector, the outcome will have implications for workforce retention and remuneration, particularly amid ongoing competition for skilled workers across the energy and infrastructure sectors.
Major AI Data Centre Proposal Signals Future Jobs Growth
A proposed $40 billion AI and hyperscale data centre development linked to the Beetaloo region could create significant long-term investment and employment opportunities for the Northern Territory. The proposal would combine digital infrastructure with energy development and could generate demand across construction, engineering, technology, energy, telecommunications and support services if progressed.
National Job Advertisements Continue to Rise
Job advertisements across Australia increased in June, signalling continued demand for workers despite broader economic uncertainty. The sustained demand provides a positive backdrop for Northern Territory employers, particularly in industries experiencing ongoing skills shortages. For jobseekers, continued recruitment activity highlights opportunities across a range of industries, while employers may need to remain competitive in attracting and retaining skilled workers.
Conclusion
Overall, July’s developments point to a resilient Northern Territory economy, supported by strong employment, trade and investment activity. Emerging opportunities in energy, technology and major infrastructure could create new pathways for skilled workers, while competition for talent and changing workforce needs will remain important considerations for employers. As the Territory continues to attract investment, maintaining a skilled and available workforce will be key to supporting future growth.
